Outstanding contributions and service to the cause of general semantics

About the J. Talbot Winchell Award

First awarded in 1988, the J. Talbot Winchell Award annually goes to individuals for their outstanding contributions and service to the cause of general semantics.

Awarded by the Institute of General Semantics, it is presented annually at the Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecture.

About J. Talbot Winchell

John Talbot Winchell (1895-1981) — known familiarly as “Tal” — was a longtime student and benefactor of general semantics, and a former Trustee and honorary Fellow of the Institute of General Semantics.

Winchell first came to Alfred Korzybski’s seminar in Los Angeles in 1939, and attended numerous seminars after then. He was a leader in general semantics in the Los Angeles area, remaining active until his death.
